My
Experience
in
the
MCM
Competition
Participating
in
the
Mathematical
Contest
in
Modeling
(MCM)
was
a
challenging
yet
rewarding
experience
for
me.
As
a
team
of
three,
we
were
given
96
hours
to
tackle
an
open-ended
modeling
problem.
The
problem
required
us
to
use
mathematical
modeling
to
develop
an
optimal
strategy
for
harvesting
forests
sustainably.
We
started
by
researching
the
current
state-of-the-art
methods
used
in
forest
management,
and
then
proposed
our
own
innovative
solution.
We
modeled
forest
growth
and
harvesting
rates
using
systems
of
differential
equations,
and
used
optimization
techniques
to
find
the
most
efficient
harvesting
strategy.
Finally,
we
presented
our
findings
in
a
20-page
paper.
Although
we
worked
non-stop
for
four
straight
days,
the
experience
was
incredibly
fun

and
educational.
Not
only
did
we
learn
a
lot
about
forest
management,
but
we
also
developed
valuable
teamwork
and
problem-solving
skills.
We
also
gained
a
deeper
appreciation
for
the
beauty
and
practicality
of
mathematics.
When
the
results
were
announced,
we
were
thrilled
to
learn
that
our
team
received
an
Honorable
Mention,
and
we
were
among
the
top
31%
of
all
teams.
Although
we
didn't
win
a
top
prize,
just
participating
in
the
MCM
was
a
praiseworthy
achievement.
Overall,
the
MCM
was
an
unforgettable
experience
that
I
would
highly
recommend
to
any
math
enthusiasts
looking
to
challenge
themselves
and
grow
as
problem
solvers.
